Making The Next Move: Living As A Cancer Survivor
Battling cancer is one of the hardest things for someone to be asked to endure. And many, for several different reasons, do not win this battle. The disease itself takes a huge toll both mentally and physically. It's easy to live in a world where the stories of survival make up the bulk of the cases of people who are fighting cancer, but this is simply not the case. These stories are very important in helping those who need hope that they too can be cancer survivors.
But cancer survivors do not get to be this way overnight, and that’s what usually makes each of their stories so unique and incredible. Many times it consists of very painful treatment that leaves them weak and in terrible discomfort, and also usually is accompanied by a degrading look as well (such as a loss of hair). So the road is long and hard, but it helps to see a light at the end of the tunnel.
There is no formula to beating cancer, and therefore there is no guarantee. Many have found hope in the advances in modern science that have added dramatic change and aggressive approaches to treating the disease. If you are one of the fortunate souls that were cured with current treatment methods, you have a heavy burden being the face of hope on such a dark road. There is no doubt that you yourself aren't even the same person you were before you found out about the cancer.
So, lets suppose for a moment that you just found out you were cancer free. You are elated and feeling blessed. Your fingers are trembling with the excitement as you dial all the numbers you remember. You call everyone you know to tell them the great news.
In addition to the elation, you might also feel anxious and stressed about what this means for you now. What do you do with your life now? Some, in hearing this news decide that they should devote their lives to awareness of the disease and getting others to support further research towards a certain cure. Others want to be able to be well enough to simply go back to work and feel part of the world at large again. Whatever you choose, there is help for you.
Many programs and groups have formed from the tragic circumstances of living and coping with cancer. These groups also provide support (rehabilitation, job placement, and even financial help) to those who are now cancer free and trying to move on with their lives and leave the pain and suffering behind them.
Many groups, such as the Lance Armstrong Foundation, offer many services and support for those who are currently battling cancer as well as those that survived. Through their outreach and fundraising, they offer financial help and resources to assist those in all stages of living with cancer.
Hearing stories of victory over cancer is incredible. So many folks have so much trouble finding hope, and so if you know someone who has survived or you yourself have, remember that you can be the light for someone else. It's a long hard road, but it helps to have a friend to walk with you.
