Caring for Teak Furniture
Preserving and Staining Your Teak
It really isn’t all that necessary to defend teak furniture. If left in its natural state, teakwood doesn’t really require any upkeep, and it is exclusive in that aspect. Teakwood is something that can be left outdoors all year long without having to worry about it, even if the conditions of the climate are extreme. It is because of this that people genuinely love outdoor teak furniture.
You might have heard that leaving your teak furniture in the sun will turn it grey, while this is true it is a native occurrence and doesn’t cause any harm to the wood.
For people who want to preserve the biological color of the wood that it has when they buy their furniture, it is a common practice to use a teak sealant. They often use it to darken it up a little as well. Applying a teak sealant to your furniture will do more than just help to darken it up, it will also provide a UV protection and an anti-fungicide which will keep mold from developing. It doesn’t matter whether you’re teak furniture is old or new, you can apply teak sealants to them after they have been cleaned. These sealers aren’t the same thing as lacquer. The sealant simply acts to preserve the wood, while at the same time still allowing it to release its oils naturally. It will not bubble or peel up like lacquer will. This is going to help to stain your wood and protect it at the same time. By standing your teak a darker color, you will be providing it with more UV protection, and in the end you are going to have to stain it less. If any unfortunate circumstance you already have a piece of teak furniture that has been varnished, you will need to sand all of that old glaze off and then either leave it organic or put on a stain.
It isn’t very difficult to apply the preservative and it is pretty straightforward. Make sure that you apply the preservative to the furniture during the summer time months when it has been sitting in the sun for a lengthy time and all of the grains are opened up. To apply it, all you have to do is spray it on and then rub it with a rag. Be sure that you apply two coats, and make sure that you apply it everywhere. Be sure to put your piece of furnishings on something that you don’t mind if it gets stained, like an old bed sheet or something. You will need to apply a coat to your furnishings each year, but after the first coat you will only need to apply it to surfaces that received the sun.
After you have sealed your teak furnishings, there is very little else that needs to be done to defend the finish. It doesn’t hurt to wash your furniture every once in a while with a mild soap and water to remove any normal soiling. If you spill anything on the sealant, like coffee, wine, or foods that stain, you need to make sure that you get it off immediately as these things can penetrate through the sealant and leave stains on your furnishings. If you want to avoid this, you can put a teak clear coat on the surfaces that are in danger, like tabletops as this will improve resistance to stains.
Teakwood is naturally pretty impervious to water because of the oil that is contained naturally inside of it. Because of this, things like glaze, water sealers, and products with an oil base aren’t recommended for this type of furnishings. If you do you can be assured that it will chip and peel off. The only way to remove these mistakes is by standing, which can be a real nightmare and is best avoided.
Contrary to what you might think putting oil on the teak isn’t going to keep it from turning gray, and more often than not it will end up in causing your furniture to mold or mildew. This again causes more work for you as you will need to wash the furniture with bleach and soap and then sand the surface.
