Behaviour Drives Results Not Systems

In all forms of social organization such as in business, sport and education there are those who advocate systems and procedures in order to bring success. When I joined a company called LifePath Unlimited, sure enough, there were those who kept repeating “just follow the system”.

Certainly, systems and procedures have their place since they make life a whole lot easier. Companies such as LifePath Unlimited have a “turn key system”. By following the system, business associates are assured of success.

However if success was primarily determined by having a great system in place, how can anyone fail? The fact is, in LifePath Unlimited and in every organization it is people that run systems.

Certainly the best organizations have great systems in place. However what is the real X factor that drives results more than anything else? It is mindset. Beyond systems are people, with thoughts and feelings and subsequently behaviors that can change in a given day just like the weather. At LifePath Unlimited there are peak performers that follow the system to bring fantastic results. At the same time, there are others, with great intentions, adhering to the same system, who fail abysmally.

Essentially mindset is primary and systems are secondary. Behaviors derive from how one thinks. LifePath Unlimited business owners that I know are people who make the system work for them. They are people who are motivated, disciplined and passionate about being successful. Those that fail, use the same system, but lack these qualities.

When people emphasize systems above all else, they create human organizations that lack heart. LifePath Unlimited, being in the personal development industry, has been able to effectively create a culture where it’s not just about making money. The pursuit of human growth and the business side of the company are in seamless alignment.

So how can we understand the relationship between human behavior and systems? Both are necessary and exist in a relationship similar to the relationship between mind and body. Human beings through their behavior (mind) creates, works, fixes and replaces systems (body). In my LifePath Unlimited business, should the system become outdated, we the people will build a better one.
